A software engineer resume is most effective when it demonstrates impact -- what you built, what changed as a result, and how you approached problems -- rather than reading like a list of job duties.

Lead each role with context, then impact

Start each experience entry with one line of context (your role, the team or product), then follow with bullet points describing what you specifically did and, where you have them, honest results.

Choose 2-4 relevant projects, not everything you've built

A Projects section works well alongside Experience, especially for personal, open-source, or academic projects that demonstrate skills your day job might not showcase. Pick the ones most relevant to the roles you're targeting rather than listing every side project.

Organize skills by category

Grouping skills into categories like Programming Languages, Frameworks, Cloud, and Tools is easier to scan than one long undifferentiated list, and it signals how you think about your own toolkit.

Match your resume to the role, within reason

It's reasonable to reorder sections or adjust which projects you highlight for different applications, as long as everything you present remains accurate. Never add a skill, project, or piece of experience you don't genuinely have just because a job posting asks for it.

Proofread for consistency

Consistent date formats, tense (past tense for previous roles, present tense for your current one), and bullet punctuation all contribute to a polished, professional impression -- small details, but ones recruiters notice.
